NEWLY-APPOINTED Home Secretary Sajid Javid has been promptly button-holed by Newton Abbot MP Anne Marie Morris demanding more effective human rights legislation.
Morris, a member of the Commons’ public accounts committee, did not waste time in telling Amber Rudd’s successor that the Modern Slavery Act ‘isn’t working in practice.’
In an open letter to the occupant of the recently vacated hot seat she insists: ‘There are outstanding implementation challenges that need to be addressed.’
She argued: ‘Slavery is taking place up and down the country, and in every small town and village. When we get our car washed for a very cheap price, when we choose a cheap nail bar without asking ourselves why, we join the silent majority of acceptance.’
The local MP told the incumbent: ‘As one of your early first steps as Home Secretary, can I urge you to act – to deliver on the Prime Minister’s promise to reduce modern slavery?’
