VOLUNTEERS at Dawlish Museum have taken delivery of a piece of the town’s history.

Contractors BAM Nuttall, working for Network Rail on the new sea wall, with the help of Dawlish History Group, have salvaged a part of Dawlish’s heritage.

The contractors have saved two of the repurposed support posts which had been used to support the canopy before the sheltered walk near the railway station.

The canopy has been removed during work to construct the new sea wall and promenade.

Now two of the posts have been saved and transported by the BAM Nuttall team to Dawlish Museum.

A museum spokesman said: ‘It is believed they are former gas lamps that were repurposed in the 1940s to help support the ornate brackets of the platform barrow crossing above.

‘We hope to have them upright and restored to tell their story sometime in the future.’
