A novel interpretation of the Nativity story – told from the point of view of the animals – has been wowing children, staff and children at Abbotskerswell Primary School.

Cows, cockerels, cats, owls, dogs and donkeys get the lead parts in this version, called Born in a Barn. There are no wise men – only the camels they arrived on.

'The animals can't understand what a baby is doing in a barn,' said deputy headteacher Lisa Walsh.

More than 30 children aged between four and seven took part, with the school choir adding the music.

Miss Walsh said the play, written by Out of the Ark which provides musical resources for primary schoolchildren, is new this season and has been great fun to rehearse.

'The camels do a wonderful dance which made everyone laugh because of their knobbly knees. They have loved it.'
