SHALDON is hoisting the flags this summer – with a difference. The village will be decorated with authentic royal naval signal flags that will not only add a splash of colour but also vex visitors. Dozens of messages will be spelled out in code and it will be up to visitors to decipher what they mean with help of postcards available in the village shops. The London Inn greeting will welcome holidaymakers to Shaldon, cheekily described as 'a quaint little drinking village with a fishing problem.' A mature resident has joined in by announcing 'retired' outside his house. There are new flags this year, warning motorists of the 20mph zone outside the primary school. It reads 'twenty is plenty'. And there's one to highlight Shaldon's singing bridge. Traders and landlords have purchased most of the signal flags, some of the cash coming from a recent fundraiser. Cllr Chris Clarance, a boat owner and the brains behind the colourful scheme, said: 'I remember as a child the village decorated throughout August and it used to look wonderful. 'I thought that this will not only add a splash of colour for our summer-time events here, but also keep holidaymakers amused as they wander around the village.' It is expected that the bunting will be displayed from Monday until early September. It means the village will be well decorated for the water carnival on August 5 and the week-long Shaldon Regatta at the end of August.

Shaldon Expects: Cllr Chris Clarance displays some of the colourful bunting which will decorate Shaldon for the next few weeks.
