A new fire station for Teignmouth is still on course, members of devon Fire Authority were told yesterday.
Chief fire officer Paul Young told members in a report: 'Whilst this site has had its difficulties, the project is progressing and should meet the planned programme.'
Teignbridge councillors John Clatworthy and Fred Symons had asked for a progress report on the station, which is designed to replace the present one in Second Avenue.
Current proposals for the £700,000 scheme involve a site in Higher Brook Street, Teignmouth.
It is cheduled to take place during financial years 2004/05 and 2005/06, with land purchase expected to be completed this financial year.
Work is still being done of the final design.
In recent weeks, Mr Young told the fire authority, the internal design of the staion has been changed to bring it up to the required standard for dignity at work and the Siability Discrimination Act.
Once the design is completed and all planning issues agreed, an application for a Stopping Up order for part of the site designated a public highway will be made.
It was the application for a Stopping Up order that caused a public inquiry relating to this development in l998.
Mr Young said: 'Members will recall that the inspector at that time held that the objections were reasonable and the Stopping Up Order should be refused.
'Since that time, the concerns of the objectors have been addressed, either by negotiation and agreement or by the lapse of time.
'Therefore it is expected that the Stopping Up Order will be granted this time.'
