A NEW gym could be opening in Teignmouth as an application to develop the former SeaSports Southwest building is submitted to planners.

25/00796/FUL comprises a change of use of the building, which is adjacent to New Quay Street, to Class E, allowing for it to be used as a gym.

According to the planning statement, the gym will operate as an affiliate of CrossFit, offering classes, training and nutrition advice.

If the application gets the green-light, it would make the proposed Teignmouth gym the first CrossFit-affiliated gym in Teignbridge.

A target date of July 14 has been given for a decision on the application by Teignbridge District Council.

The gym would occupy the whole ground floor of the building, with a range of gym machines and equipment provided for users.

The existing changing facilities on the first floor will be retained, the planning statement says.

The first floor is proposed to be used as an ancillary space for the gym, for stretching before and after classes, storage of belongings and so on and so forth.

25/00796/FUL proposes no physical alterations to the exterior of the building aside from replacement signage.

The applicants have a strong community focus and would actively support local community groups by providing occasional and ‘one-off’ use of the first floor when it is not required by the gym, the Mid-Devon Advertiser understands.

The typical operating hours of a CrossFit gym, during which scheduled classes would take place, are Monday to Friday between 6am and 7am, 7am and 8am, 9.30am and 10.30am, 5.15pm and 6.15pm and 6.15pm and 7.15pm.

It would operate between 8am and 9am, 9am and 10am and 10am and 11am on Saturdays and be closed on Sundays.

The facility would also be utilised outside of these hours, between 12pm and 4pm on weekdays only, as an ‘open gym’ for members to practice particular skills or have personal training sessions, for example.
