A GIANT crane was brought in to install an historic footbridge over the rail line at Dawlish.

Engineers working on the project to completely overhaul the iconic station, which was badly damaged during the devastating storm of 2014, spent Saturday night manoeuvring the main deck span into place.

Installation of the footbridge marks yet another major milestone in the lengthy project to safeguard the vulnerable coastal line.

It also means, for the first time in its history, the station  will have a lift.

The 70 tonne bridge, which was levered into place over night on Saturday, now links the two lift shafts.
