RAIN held off for this year’s May Day celebrations nay pupils from Wolborough Primary School in Newton Abbot.

The whole school including nursery children, took part in the day’s events, held at the end of the month instead of the traditional May 1.

The children walked procession from the school to the Market Square where friends and family watched them dance around a May Pole.

A school spokesman said: ‘They were in for a treat as dances were performed by every class to rapturous applause.

‘Highlights this year included: faultless performances of 'The Spider's Web' and 'The Plait' around the Maypole by Year 6, a traditional folk dance including sticks by Year 3 and 'The Macarena' performed enthusiastically by the Reception class.’

At lunchtime, the school opened up for families to join their children for a picnic lunch in the playground.

Mayor of Newton Abbot Colin Parker, then crowned the May Queen and Master of Ceremonies announced the start of the afternoon performances with an extra performance of the school’s dance club with its performance to Change For Good from the musical Wicked.
