A HOUSE in Newton Abbot is once again lit for the festive season, providing Christmas cheer for passers by – as well as cash for a deserving charity.

This is the fifth year that Bill and Elaine Beech have decorated their property in Oakland Road, with thousands of lights, a moving illuminated railway and Father Christmas in the top window, with all donations going this year to the Devon Air Ambulance Trust.

However, the covid crisis had threatened to keep things in the dark.

‘Back in the spring I did have my doubts about this year’s light show,’ said Bill.

‘However, I carried on with the planning anyway, buying new features and repairing some of the old ones.

‘It wasn’t until the second lockdown that I hardened my resolve to spread some light and cheer at this festive time and I think the result is well worth it.’

The display has been planned as covid-safe as possible and Bill has asked people not to congregate at the front but to stay socially distanced and approach when others have left.

A collecting box has been fixed to the gate pillar for donations and money can also be contributed online at the Devon Air Ambulance website by clicking donate, entering the amount you would like to donate and typing ‘Beech lights’ in the comments box.

Last year’s display raised just over £400 for the Mare and Foal Sanctuary and Bill is hoping that a similar amount can be raised this year.

Continued Bill: ‘Every penny raised goes to the charity and we hold nothing back for costs.

‘The Devon Air Ambulance is a very worthwhile cause and our way of thanking the NHS.

‘Our efforts are rewarded by the look of joy on children’s face – and the smiles from adults too!’

The light display in Oakland Road will remain on until the beginning of January.
