wayland Van Hildyck Smith's letter re 'white haired whizz-kids' on mobility scooters is a statement with which I must take issue.
As a driver of a scooter and now a powered wheelchair of many years, not having a test of the ability to drive a disability aid is one that is long overdue. It appears that those selling them (of which there are many), are less than pro-active on the safety issue once money has changed hands.
However, many of us know when to moderate speed and act in accordance with the situation, they are driving in. Indeed, scooters are often ignored until the last second, by the inability of people to take their eyes off their phones when walking.
It can be really dangerous for disability drivers when out and about, as the appalling state of the pavements and roads often act as means of throwing aids off balance and causing some distress.
Dropped kerbs can be a joke, as they may appear lowered, but when going over them, they certainly are not – I wonder if the highway agencies ever test them with a person in a wheelchair or on a scooter?
Advertisement boards stuck out in the way on pavements are surely a hazard to all – this also affects all who have eye impairment and all who need some type of mobility aid.
In conclusion, please do not tar us all with the same brush – a test is needed without a doubt, but we are not 'all white haired whizz-kids'!MORE LETTERS IN OUR DIGITAL EDITION
