Rubbish items were used to make creative models when children took part in a scrapheap challenge run by Newton Abbot Library in conjunction with this year's cheese and onion, garden, arts and crafts show last week. The winners were invited to a special presentation at the Library and were given book tokens for their efforts. In first place was Florence Daulton, followed by Stanley Taylor, who was runner up. Ashley Michaels and Nisha Maya Asher-Jones shared third place and Victoria Coban came fourth. Their entries were judged by Cllr Gordon Hook; Newton Abbot mayor Cllr Daphne Watts; Teignbridge Council's recycling officer Tracey Fey and Newton Abbot town crier Ken Purchase Matt Stead, children's librarian at Newton Abbot, was pleased with the quality and level of entries. 'We had 18 children enter altogether. 'They came to the library and I gave a talk on recycling then they made their entry,' he said. 'All the entries were good and it was obvious many had thought about what they were going to make before they came along. 'We had a variety of entries from a giant giraffe to a factory and a fork lift truck.'
