Students and staff at Coombeshead College, Newton Abbot, have expressed their delight at the inauguration of Barack Obama, America's first black president.
On Tuesday Obama, a lawyer and the son of a black man and a white woman, was sworn in as the 44th leader of the United States.
Washington DC was packed for the event which was watched live on television by a vast global audience.
Among the Coombes-head students to welcome his arrival was 13-year-old Farhana Rahmon.
She said: 'This is a most important day for mankind. Barack Obama has started work as the first black president of the United States of America. Obama will start to bring peace and he has the support of millions of people.'
Sophie Wilkes, 13, said: 'Obama gave an inspiring speech. He said: "Today I say to you that the challenges we face are real. They are serious and they are many. They will not be met easily or in a short span of time. But know this, America – they will be met. On this day, we gather because we have chosen hope over fear, unity of purpose over conflict and discord".'
Luke Davey, 12, was impressed with Obama's stance on those accused of terrorism.
'Barack Obama's first major act was to request the suspension of all military trials at Guantanamo Bay. The request is going to halt proceedings in 21 cases, including one against five men accused of plotting the September 11, 2001, attacks.
'The halt will give Mr Obama time to review the trial process. Barack Obama has repeatedly promised to close Guantanamo Bay, where some 250 inmates accused of links to terrorism remain.
'I think it's great for America to have its first black president. I hope he stops the fighting in Iraq completely.'
Fifteen-year-old Aaron Kudi said: 'It's great for black people. Obama's election has made history. Black people haven't been respected and now we will get more respect and be proud.'
Humanities teacher Sarah Dornan commented: 'It's a very hopeful moment in history. Barack Obama is a very intelligent man.'
Student counsellor Celia Jackman said: 'I think President Obama is wonderful. After all this time we have somebody who can build hope for the future. Obama has a very positive outlook on the world.
'When I watched his inauguration, I had tears in my eyes.'
