Dainton Park's 2010 captain Terry Membery kicked off his term in the traditional way, with a drive-in stableford competition. Crisp, wintery conditions prevented play on the main greens, but the field were undeterred, with several members posting superb scores – James Klinkenberg (h'cap nine) topped division one with 45 points, with Chris Rowe (h'cap 16) winning division two with 47 and Kevin Down (h'cap 28) triumphing in division three with 46.The main event occurred later in the day, as members lined up to witness Membery's exhibition drive off the first tee.Members were asked guess how far he would drive the ball, in return for a donation to his chosen charity, Help For Heroes. Unfortunately his hopes of a perfect drive disappeared in a puff of smoke! (above). When the dust settled he realised he had been handed a comedy exploding ball, which disintegrated on impact. Unfazed by the prank, Membery reloaded and sent his second ball straight and true. Neil Warburton correctly guessed the distance, with £150 raised for the charity. Membery, who served in the Royal Navy, has been a member of Dainton since the club opened in 1993. He has always contributed a great deal of time to organising competitions and social events. The new vice-captain is John Strainge.l Better weather meant a second chance to hold the annual Team Turkey Trot at Dainton Park, which was postponed before Christmas due to bad weather.Played as a better-ball pairs competition, it was won by Clint Owen (h'cap 21) and Simon Prior (18) with 47 points. Runners-up were Stuart Goodenough (ten) and Simon Langler (five) on 45, with Bob Campbell (14) and Ronnie Own (11) third.
