YOUNGSTERS at South Dartmoor Academy, Ashburton, spent their last week of the summer term digging into the history of the first world war.

The group of boys, with help from teachers, got busy with spades, rakes and picks to create a realistic replica of a trench used by troops who served in the conflict.

They completed the hands-on learning project with a 'no man's land' sign and barbed wire defences, modern health and safety rules demanding that be made from silver string.

The idea was the brainchild of teacher Kate Lea.
