MORE than one thousand pounds has been raised in Teignmouth following a charity darts competition, which saw eight teams go head to head at the town’s social club.
The Demetia Society is to benefit from a cash boost of £1250 thanks to the competition, which took place on Thursday, November 30 and was organised by John Pearce and David Head.
The final saw Teignmouth Probus Club’s team pitted against the great and the good from Greenwood Accountancy, who proved themselves the better team, claiming victory.
The money, described as ‘vital’ by John, who himself lives with dementia, is to go toward the costs involved with renting a room at Dawlish Hosptial.
Local persons living with dementia gather in the room once a month, the cost of which used to be covered by the Demetia Society but this is no longer the case - hence the need for fundraising.
‘As a person with dementia, it is very important that people, the public, support us and be patient with us’ John said.
‘Some people you meet, especially if you’re having a bad day, they either think you’re drunk or that you’re an idiot, but this is not the case’ he added.
Before the first dart was thrown attendees were entertained by the ‘Teignmouth Mermaid’, otherwsie known as Kathryn Collings, who gave an enthralling performance of song.
During a break in play, the social club provided a buffet for both contestants and spectators, which was described as ‘excellent’ by David.
‘It was heaving on the night which was great to see’ David said.
‘The social club put on a buffet and it was excellent.
‘There was a raffle too, with more than 50 prizes and so it went on.
‘People have been superb, absolutely superb’ David added.
