A TEIGNBRIDGE school which caters for children with complex needs has received an Ofsted rating of ‘Outstanding’ in every area.
The Greater Horseshoe School is based in Heathfield near Bovey Tracey.
The school, which was inspected in March, provides education for young people with complex needs, and offers a unique tailored programme for every child, combining a therapeutic approach, outdoor learning and individual academic and vocational programmes.
During the inspection, the school was judged on the quality of education, behaviour and attitudes, personal development, sixth form provision and leadership and management. All were found to be Outstanding, and the glowing report puts the school among the UK’s elite of ‘Outstanding’ education providers.
According to Ofsted, an Outstanding school is highly effective in delivering outcomes that provide exceptionally well for all its pupils’ needs, ensuring children are well equipped for the next stage of their education.
During their visit, inspectors met with the headteacher, Lukasz Miecznikowski, staff and students, visited lessons, and observed extra-curricular activities.
The Ofsted report stated: ‘Highly skilled, specialist staff work intensively with pupils. Pupils follow the example of staff by being kind to one another. Many pupils form strong friendships which they cherish.’
The inspectors were impressed with the school’s curriculum and the quality of the teaching.
‘Leaders have designed a curriculum with broad appeal. They assess pupils academic and personal development needs astutely. They encourage pupils in subjects they have not considered before. They have education, health and care (EHC) plans setting out long term goals. For each pupil, leaders provide a curriculum to maximise their chance of success.’
Inspectors particularly praised the music department: ‘The curriculum is remarkably ambitious. Pupils experiment with multiple instruments and also specialise. They receive highly effective music tuition through which they learn to read music and perform to a high level of competence.
Mr Miecznikowski said: ‘The report recognises the hard work and high expectations that lead to excellent academic outcomes, alongside the importance of personal development and supportive community where the wellbeing of both pupils and staff are key.
‘I would like to thank all students, staff, parents/carers, governors and our local community for their ongoing hard work, support and dedication.
‘We have an inspiring team of staff and pupils at the school who work tirelessly together to provide Outstanding education to the children of The Greater Horseshoe School.’
