fears that controversial dark colour schemes will be used on new houses at the Water's Edge development in Shaldon have been allayed.

After complaints from the architect and the public, Midas Homes is to overpaint the dark colour of a prominent corner-plot terrace in a dolphin-blue colour successfully used on other award-winning sites.

Critics believe that colours used at the development should blend well with the pastel shades for which Shaldon's buildings are noted.

Teignbridge Council development control officer Carol Walters told a meeting of the Teignhaven Working Group that phase 2 of the development had been approved. The whole site should be included in the conservation area when finished, and Teignbridge wants a 'no development rights' clause on completion of the development, which would include protection of the colour scheme.

Architect Chris Cunningham said that he would soon be able to provide the group with plans of the colours for the whole site. About 25 per cent of the houses would be white or off-white, but too many white-coloured buildings would lead to glare when facing the sun. The prominent north-east corner house will be white.

The crude houses for sale sign will be removed.
