Patrick Canavan, a member of the Torbay Labour Party, has been selected as the party's candidate for Newton Abbot in the general election.

His appointment comes five weeks after the resignation of Jermaine Atiya-Alla, who announced his departure Facebook.

He complained that the regional party had instructed members not to support him but to assist Ben Bradshaw's Exeter campaign.

Mr Canavan is 57, married with two children and four grandchildren. He has lived in Devon for 11 years and is now in Torquay.
