COUNCILLORS meeting to decide on the way forward for a proposed residents' parking scheme for Dartmouth have agreed not to pursue the matter.

It was feared that the partnership committee, which consists of members of both South Hams and Devon County councils, would steamroller through proposals which had been rejected by the town council.

But after meeting a delegation from the town council on Monday, a partnership committee working party is to recommend to the full committee that no further action be taken.

A spokesman from the working group added that should proposals for a parking scheme be forthcoming from the town council then they would be considered accordingly.

County councillor, John Mills is chairman of the residents' parking working group which he set up to look into parking problems in the town.

Cllr Mills said after the meeting: 'There will be a new town council elected in May of this year.

'If the residents perceive that there is a parking problem, and they do so from the results of the recent survey, then it is up to the electorate to elect councillors who are prepared to truly reflect the wish of the residents and work to the good of Dartmouth as a whole.

'Whether the county council will have funds available for any such future scheme remains to be seen,' added Cllr Mills.

Dartmouth town councillor, Len Manley, commented: 'At last people at grass roots level have been listened to.

'We are a holiday resort and rely on summer trade. There is not a town in Europe which does not have a short-term problem in the tourist season.

'But our park and ride scheme has eased the traffic considerably.'

The working party's recommendation is expected to go before the partnership committee when it next meets on April 8.

Highways chief, John Halliday, confirmed the working party's decision and added: 'The cash earmarked for parking proposals in Dartmouth has been withdrawn and the council is unlikely to consider allocating further cash in the next financial year.'
