JULIE TUCKER, of Bank Street, Newton Abbot, writes:
In response to your article on the skateboarders, etc, in Wolborough Street, I would like to add my comments on the situation.
1 I have been told by the local police that unless the children who congregate there are committing an offence then they have no powers to move them on.
2 Teignbridge Council would have to apply for a new ruling to the government to make the said area 'designated', which would then enable them to prohibit cycling, skateboarding, etc, which apparently costs thousands of pounds.
3 Teignbridge Council has inadvertently made a perfect area for the children to meet, with street lighting, a smooth paved area, bench seats to perform stunts on and a chip shop and supermarket nearby to get their food from, so they have a place with no apparent rules and regulations and could stay there all night if they chose to, which is very unfair on the residents and a worry to the shopkeepers in that area.
4 I believe the children of this town should have an area to use for their recreational activities but our Wolborough Street and Bank Street pedestrianised areas should remain just as that and not a play area.MORE LETTERS - SEE OUR ONLINE EDITION
