A controversial scheme for 250 homes at Penns Mount, Kingsteignton, has scraped through on a single vote despite fears that a 'shanty town' will greet visitors to the district.

The decision was taken on Monday by members of Teignbridge Council's planning committee who voted eight for, seven against with one abstention.

The meeting heard from deputy mayor Cllr Rob Harris who said that when the public had been asked what they thought about development in the prominent hillside meadow they had been firmly against.

Yet still the site had appeared in the emerging Local Plan as suitable for housing. 'They feel duped, they feel hoodwinked and have lost all confidence in the public consultation process,' he said.
