THERE was a ‘fantastic response’ from the public to the official opening of the Teignmouth River Beach and Arts Quarter on Saturday.
The zone is centred around Northumberland Place, and a new mosaic project in memory of the late Cllr Geoff Bladon, who championed the project, constructed by Michelle Greenwood Brown and the local community was unveiled after speeches by the mayor, Terry Falcao, and Cllr Bladon’s two sons, Nick and Martin.
Cllr Falcao and the mayoress, his partner Judy Saunders, along with Teignbridge councillor Doug Hellier Laing, who has responsibility for the economy and tourism, and town centre development manager Tracy Scranage, toured the many newly-opened businesses in a show of appreciation and support.
Cllr Falcao said: ‘It was an honour for us to open the new zone. It was a particularly poignant occasion because Cllr Bladon was an inspiration for the project from its inception.
‘Particular thanks also to Tracy Scranage, whose vision and hard work have resulted in this area of our town being given such a boost with a new focus and identity.
‘It was wonderful also to take the opportunity to visit some of the town centre businesses that have opened in recent months.
‘Teignmouth really is on the up, and our town centre is leading the way with its varied and competitive shops, cafes, pubs and restaurants creating a vibrant atmosphere for residents and visitors to enjoy.’
Cllr Hellier Laing said he wished he could bottle the enthusiasm Teignmouth residents had for their community, and use it throughout Teignbridge.
Ms Scranage added: ‘Well done to everyone involved on the occasion. There was a fantastic resposne from the community.
‘Michelle has created some stunning and unique mosaics, and I am sure the trail will prove a popular attraction for residents and visitors to our lovely town.
‘Thanks also to Robin Brown from The Cave who provided some suitable atmospheric music for the occasion, to our ever-supportive TAAG centre, and to all those talented artists who contributed to the mosaics.’
