CUTTING the speed limit on a dangerous stretch of a Newton Abbot road will only happen when the cash is available.

Devon County Council’s cabinet agreed to the knock the 40mph limit on St Marychurch Road down to 30 last month.

The cabinet’s decision was made despite highways officers urging them not to because it went against the authority’s policy.

Thursday morning’s highways and traffic orders committee heard that the move was a one-off based on the number of complaints about the road.

Cllr Stuart Barker was quizzed by fellow members on Thursday to reveal when the work would take place.

Cllr Barker told them: ‘If there was anything from a shortfall in the budget that couldn’t be delivered then the money would come from it and be given to this scheme.

‘And if not, it would go into the plan for next year to be delivered then.

‘The project will go ahead at some point when the funding does become available.’
