Children from All Saints Primary School, Newton Abbot, have helped shape a greener future by planting trees at Jetty Marsh, soon to become the site of the town's new hospital. The event was organised by Teignbridge Primary Care Trust, and teacher Vicky Alcock led a group of seven and eight-year-olds during the hands-on session which took the classroom into the great outdoors. 'We have been talking about tree planting in class as improvements to our playground which has included the planting of a tree for shade,' said Miss Alcock. 'We've discussed what trees do in our world and the benefits they bring and found out about the varieties such as ash and beech that we planted at Jetty Marsh.' Equipped with their new found knowledge and enthusiasm, the children paired up to dig holes and plant around 50 young saplings, assisted by the mayor of Newton Abbot, Cllr Ken Lewis. 'They really loved it and had a great afternoon full of fresh air,' said Miss Alcock. 'The children all received certificates and we're hoping to go back in the future to see how the trees are getting on.'
