DRONES have flown into police operations in Devon and Cornwall from this week.

The aerial devices, to be based at Plymouth and Exeter, will be the subject of a six-months trial.

Their main use will be for missing persons inquiries and crime scene photography.

The gadgets are equipped with high-definition cameras which can capture both video and still images.

Spokesman Insp Andy Hamilton said: ‘This technology still has its limitations. The models we are trialling are currently unable to fly at night or in adverse weather, but having the option to put a drone in the air at a few minutes’ notice could help save lives.’

A new twitter account has been created @DC_PoliceDrones which will keep the public informed about where and when the drone is in operational use within the force.
