South Devon members of Devon for Europe were out and about with their ‘Brexitometer’ over the sunny Bank Holiday weekend.

They set up a stall in Exeter where more than 340 people signed up to join the group and took leaflets about a march for a people’s vote to be held in London on June 23, for which Devon for Europe has organised coach transport.

The ‘Brexitometer’ is gauging public opinion around Devon on how Brexit is progressing. So far it’s showing people are not happy with negotiations and they would like a ‘people’s vote’ on the final deal.

Anthea Simmons, of Devon for Europe, said: ‘The people we spoke to in Exeter are pretty angry and frustrated by the whole disastrous Brexit saga and cannot understand why a government would plough on with a strategy which will leave the UK worse off in almost every way.

‘They want to do something to put a stop to the madness before it is too late so they jump at the chance to sign up. Many of them will be marching with us in London, demanding a people’s vote on the deal with the option to remain if it isn’t better than what we have got now.’

Anthea said volunteers on the Exeter stall found people very receptive to the possibility of a final say on any deal with an option to remain.

She added: ‘Many expressed frustration with the politicians and anger at the yawning gap between what was promised and what can actually be delivered.

‘The ‘Brexitometer’, which has become a regular feature on the group’s street stalls, illustrated just how strong that anti-Brexit feeling is and that people want a final say on the deal.’
