MORE than 100 more people have put their name to a petition to save two Teignbridge farms.

The Devon County Council owned farms at Holcombe and near Ide have been earmarked for potential development for housing.

But a campaign has been launched to save them for future generations of farmers.

Led by town and district councillor Alison Foden, the campaign had already attracted 1,200 to a petition and now a further 100 have signed up in the last week.

In 2018, both Manor Farm and Markhams Farm were submitted by Devon County Council’s land agent as possible sites for housing development, to the local authority Teignbridge District Council.

Cllr Foden is pleased with the support the petition is getting.

She said: ‘With COP26 happening right now, everyone is waking up to the climate and biodiversity emergency.

‘At this urgent time, it is essential and vital that we continue to campaign to support our local farmers, to campaign to preserve farmland, and to encourage and support sustainable and local farming.

‘Also to show the younger and next generations of Devon’s farmers that we support local agriculture.

‘I do support building homes in the right places, but for Devon County Council removing land, piecemeal, from Devon County’s working farms is not supportive of local sustainable farming, nor conducive to addressing local food production.’
