Despite fierce opposition from the Newton Say’s No candidate Bushell returned its two Lib Dem councillors – Jackie Hook and Rob Hayes.

Jackie Hook said: ‘I’m very, very pleased with the result of retaining our two Lib Dem seats. This feels like an endorsement of all the work we do in the ward.

‘The Newton Says No candidate came third so did pose a threat to Rob. But I don’t think they need to worry because we are committed as councillors already to the issues they’re concerned about.’
