Ex-policeman Chris Webb is going to plod it out from Chudleigh to Smeaton's Tower, Plymouth, to raise money for the Chudleigh Millennium Youth Centre.

The former detective is hoping to accumulate £1,000 from the sponsored walk for which he will cover around 38 miles during a two-day period on Saturday and Sunday, April 9 and 10.

While he serves on Chudleigh Town Council and is a former chairman, he is organising and undertaking the marathon walk entirely off his own bat.

'My passion is the Chudleigh Youth Centre and the amazing facilities they have there and what they can offer young people,' he said.

Fifty-eight-year-old Cllr Webb fears that Devon County Council cutbacks are going to permeate down to the youth services.

'The county council has spending cuts in the budget and that is sure to reflect on youth services.

'It would be a crying shame if the centre suffered from lack of funding. Other youth services will be in the same boat,' he said.

Four years ago he raised money by having his hair bleached blonde and two years ago organised an event based on the Antiques Roadshow. Together they brought in almost £1,000 for the youth centre.

Cllr Webb sets off from Chudleigh Town Hall at 9am on the Saturday and will stop at around halfway, getting a lift home, before resuming the walk on the Sunday.

The finishing line – Smeaton's Tower – is the lighthouse on Plymouth Hoe.

Anyone who would like to sponsor him can do so by getting in touch with the youth centre.
