WORK has started on Ashburton's £100,000 skate park.

The facility is being built at the Recreation Ground, Prigg Meadow, thanks mainly to the tireless efforts of the Ashburton Rollers.

The group has campaigned for more than three years to obtain the necessary funds and secured £50,000 from Sport England.

Other awards have come from Dartmoor National Park's Sustainable Development Fund, quarry firm Glendinning, Ashburton's Town Lottery Fund, the Co-op Community Fund and local contributors.

Now the builder, Maverick Industries, has begun to shape the basic form of the park that will be built with steel and concrete on land owned and maintained by Teignbridge Council.
