THE approval of planning permission by Plymouth City Council for MVV Environment's energy from waste plant in the North Yard, Devonport, has brought Whitecleaves Quarry, Buckfastleigh, back into the spotlight.

MVV, along with Gilpin Demolition, proposes to turn the quarry into a recycling plant for incinerating the bottom ash from Devonport which would be trucked to Buckfastleigh.

That, the Buckfastleigh Community Forum has claimed, would result in 86 lorry movements a day and 250 at peak periods.

It has also been estimated that 300,000 tonnes of rock would have to be blasted, and in-filling take place to create a flat base for the plant.

Residents have strongly objected to the scheme
