Salmon and sea trout are at last returning to their Dartmoor spawning grounds following April's record rainfall.

As far back as December the Environment Agency was warning that low river levels were hampering the fish's efforts to move upstream, with only a brief wet spell before Christmas helping to avoid a crisis.

Fisheries officer Chris Gardner said at the time: 'The recent rain has arrived just in time and given the fish a temporary reprieve.'

By the middle of last month however anglers on the Teign and Dart were still expressing concern because fish remained in the estuaries as a result of the low inland water levels.

An 'environmental drought' was declared on April 9
