Newton Abbot district councillor Gordon Hook has called on Teignbridge Council to hold an emergency meeting to discuss its response to the refugee crisis.

He said: ‘My hope is that response will be positive, early and coordinated.

‘The public mood is very much in sympathy with the refugees and it is my fervent hope that Teignbridge Council will commit to playing its full part in a Devon-wide coordinated programme which needs organising now.’

Teignbridge Council, as the authority responsible for housing, may be expected to house some of the refugees.

Prime Minister David Cameron has announced the UK will accept up to 20,000 refugees from Syria during the next five years. a further announcement is expected on Monday.
