THOSE who lost their lives in war and in training were remembered at Decoration Day ceremonies thousands of miles apart on Sunday.
At a service at the war graves in Newton Abbot Cemetery, standards, including those from Royal British Legion branches, the Royal Engineers Association and other ex-servicemen's organisations, were paraded.
The service was led by the Newton Abbot RBL padre, the Rev Bruce Porter, and among those attending was the mayor of Newton Abbot, Cllr Colin Parker; the chairman of Teignbridge Council, Cllr Dennis Smith; and the chairman of the Devon County RBL, Ralph Howard-Williams.
Poppy crosses were laid on each of the war graves.
At Newton Abbot RBL's twin in Canada – Medicine Hat Canadian Legion – they commemorated Decoration Day to remember those who died while at war and some 200 RAF air crew killed during training for the second world war and buried in the Medicine Hat cemetery.
