A journalist is recovering at home after being involved in a freak accident near Shaldon.

A car crashed into a fire engine and injured the journalist, who was covering the story of a spectacular road accident which left a car suspended on the roof of a detached property on Monday.

Herald Express reporter, Colleen Smith suffered an injured leg when a red Renault Clio driven by an 18-year-old man was in collision with the back of an appliance which was part of a 999 response to a Peugeot car which left the Teignmouth Road and ended up on the roof of house called Smuggler's Top.

An ambulance rushed the reporter to Torbay Hospital for treatment while a winch was used to recover the Peugeot.

She was later discharged and is recovering at home with a swollen leg.

The 94-year-old Teignmouth driver of the roof-bound car was said to be shaken up. He was taken to hospital as a precaution.

The driver of the Clio, believed to be from Shaldon, was unhurt.

A police spokesman said the driver would be reported for allegedly driving without care.

The initial accident happened just after 11.30am on Monday on a bend around half a mile towards Torquay from the turn-off to The Ness.

The injury to the journalist happened two hours later while emergency services were still at the scene.

The road reopened at 3pm.
