A WISH list for the future of the Teign estuary is being drawn up by residents. The Teign Estuary Partnership is holding a series of open sessions to find out what people want for the estuary in the next five years, writes Hannah Taylor. They are being given the opportunity to suggest improvements and what priorities should be for wildlife, water quality, river users and industry. Estuaries officer Graeme Smith said: 'We want to make the most of the natural asset for wildlife and as a recreational and economic resource. 'This is a chance for people to say what they think the priorities are,' he said. The partnership is hoping to provide a public pontoon and a shower facility for Back beach, Teignmouth, users but final design and location is yet to be decided. Plans to develop the mussel bed industry, including a start-up business, were mooted two years ago. Work on water quality has moved forward and also in the pipeline are ideas for improved shore side landing and processing facilities for fishermen. A recent open day at Bishopsteignton showed support for the cycle route planned from Newton Abbot to Teignmouth. A public exhibition on the first stage, from Newton Abbot to the Passage House Hotel, Hackney, is planned for May. The Teignmouth to Shaldon section is phase two. 'It is a superb route for commuters and there will be benefits for tourism. We can look at the success of the Camel Trail or Tarka Trail for examples of how it can work,' said Mr Smith. Other events are planned for the Victoria Hall, Shaldon, on Tuesday, Newton Abbot Leisure Centre on Tuesday, April 3, and Stokeinteignhead Village Hall on Wednesday April 4, all from 3pm-8pm. The revised management strategies to include the views put forward in this consultation will be available in May.
