TRAFFIC routes through Bovey Tracey may change radically and townspeople are being asked for their views.
The town council is looking at ways to improve on-street parking and traffic flow through an increasingly congested town centre and has arrived at four different options, which include the imposition of a one-way system or a priority scheme.
These are now on display in the town and the council is keen to gauge public reaction.
The proposals will also create a safer environment for pedestrians and cyclists and follows the council’s policy of making Bovey Tracey a cycle-friendly town.
Bovey Tracey Town Council’s regeneration committee chairman, Cllr Eoghan Kelly, said: ‘The current town centre traffic system has made the area particularly hostile to pedestrians.
’Redesigning the way traffic flows has been a key aim of the regeneration committee and the town council for a long time and so I’m delighted that these ambitions are starting to gather pace. This consultation seeks the public’s views about the general principle of making these changes.
‘These are draft options, as we are not yet in a position to say what the detailed designs will be until further discussions take place with the county council. At the moment it is important that we gauge the views of residents and businesses to see if they support this strategic objective.’
The plans are now on display at Bovey Tracey Library, along with feedback forms. A member of the town council will be present to hear people’s thoughts about the proposals on Wednesday from 6pm to 7pm; Saturday, August 6 and Tuesday, August 16 from 10am to 11am and Thursday, August 18 from 3pm to 4pm.
Cllr Kelly continued: ‘These major improvements could see the centre completely transformed and turned into a much more civilised place for everyone, encouraging more people to use the local high street and driving wider regeneration of the area.’
The display will remain at the library until Friday, August 26. Copies of the draft Traffic Management Plan, feedback form and proposed layouts will also be available to download via www.boveytracey.gov.uk.
