There were tears of happiness and sadness when youngsters from across the district got their A level results yesterday.

Brian Whiffen, head of Sixth Form at Coombeshead College, Newton Abbot, said the school is celebrating one of its best A level results on record.

'We had a 99 per cent pass rate,' he said.

'The vast majority of students have got into the university they wanted.

'It is the first year the new top grade – A* – has been introduced and we've had some students achieve that grade.

'Our results are a testament to the hard work of both the pupils and staff.'
