Terry Ward, of Hill Road, Newton Abbot, writes:

I understand that public consultation on town centre proposals is soon to be available. I would like to put forward the following views for consideration.

The Asda development has greatly improved Newton Abbot's town centre and those involved should be thanked for the outcome.

l The next priority development is the rear of Bank Street along Highweek Way and part of Wolborough Street. It should be as big a development as possible.

It should be as high as the library at the Bank Street end and the CarpetRight building at the other. It should have a central feature on Highweek Way and if possible the central entrance to the development. It should also overhang Highweek Way at first floor level to maximise the shopping area, which would be most important and/or if necessary housing/hotel.

Highweek Way would be pedestrianised. Services in the ground would remain.

As most of the vehicles leaving Asda Wolborough Street car park turn right, an exit into Highweek Street/Market Street would be feasible and would improve traffic flow. The buses would not be missed and could use Market Street/Sherborne Road.

Devon highways would need to be convinced that building over the highway was in everyone's best interests, which I think it is.

There would need to be a lot of support from the owners around the site, some of whose land could be included in the site. Teignbridge would have to manage it and involve the town council, the chamber of commerce and the people of the town itself.

It may take time but it would be well worth it for the town. It would take some doing and I hope all involved will make it happen.

2 I wonder if St Leonard's Church and the attached building might not be the site for the hotel?

3 I hope Teignbridge will buy the Golden Lion square, plant a tree in the centre and allow informal car parking, particularly for the disabled.

4 I wonder if spending money on the open space between the tax office and the rear of Queen Street is in the town's best interests? It will be expensive and I am not sure it will be much used. The best use of this land is car parking, right down to the surgery. If the lemon could be bridged, it would increase parking. Businesses in Queen Street would be thrilled.

5 I hope the cattle and sheep market can stay forever. They are unlikely to be cost effective if moved. If they have to go, shopping would the soft option and on the wrong side of the road. car parking and/or some offices are better options.THIS AND OTHER LETTERS IN OUR ONLINE EDITION
