A Teignbridge councillor and her family have been caught in a major sandstorm which has spelt disaster for their holiday of a lifetime.

Cllr Sally Morgan's family was caught by a powerful rain and sandstorm which brought down power cables and closed roads in Egypt.

Sally, her husband Richard and daughter Carys, from Bovey Tracey, were on a cruise around the Red Sea for a Christmas break.

They were ashore for an overnight stay to see Luxor and Karnak when the drama broke on Wednesday.

The coach they were in became stranded in the Arabian desert between Luxor and Safaga.

'The sandstorm was particularly scary and the driver had to stop as he couldn't see a thing,' Cllr Morgan told the Advertiser from Eygypt.

'We could hear the sand blasting the coach and the road was covered. It was like a bad blizzard times a thousand.'
