THE headteacher of Starcross Primary school has appealed to the community to help tidy up an ugly eyesore near the school.

Art Freer wants the electricity sub-station next to the school premises to receive a makeover to make it easier on the eye and more secure.

The sub-station building is owned by Starcross parish council, which has pledged support for the headmaster's aims.

The parish council welcomed Mr Freer to its meeting last week and came up with ways of tackling the problem.

These include removing palisade fencing, removing spinners on the roof and increasing security to the transformer.

Mr Freer said: 'The most important thing is the parish council are behind improving the appearance of the sub station.

'It's a monstrosity at the moment and looks very poor.

'But I would like members of the community to help us get the work done.

'For instance, last year we were able to build a swimming pool at the school with public backing.

'It would be fantastic if we could get the same kind of support for this scheme.'

Mr Freer said staff took a lot of pride in the appearance of the school, adding: 'There are historic buildings on the premises like an 1839 cottage.

'And we have taken great care of the school environment.

'I have had one or two comments from parents about the poor contrast between the sub-station and the school.

'It's something we need to clear up.

'We've drawn up plans showing how we would like things to look.

'And it would be great if we could get some progress on this some time before the summer break starts.'

Jacquie Tucker, parish council clerk, said the council backed the school's aims.

She said: 'We are all moving in the same direction. At the moment the sub-station is a very scruffy and unsightly place.

'We want to help the school and the community by improving its appearance for one and all.'
