The search for the district's outstanding young people is on once again. In 2007, the Mid-Devon Advertiser series ran its first Young Heroes initiative to highlight the youngsters in our area who had selflessly helped others or had overcome adversity. The teenager who impressed us most, although it was a tough call, was Kingsteignton 16-year-old Jade Barlow, who cares for her brother James. He lives with a life-threatening illness and requires round the clock attention.Jade's story, and that of her family, was truly amazing and demonstrated how far some people will go for those they love. For her efforts Jade was rewarded with a clutch of prizes and, of course, an appearance in our pages. She was also given the unique gift of being invited to switch on the Newton Abbot festive lights, an honour usually reserved for a celebrity or dignitary. The reward for everyone involved in the Young Heroes initiative was to be reminded that the negative young press our youngsters sometimes get is not always deserved. We are delighted to say that the scheme is back for 2009.Once again the winner, if there can be such a thing in a programme which turns up so many deserving youngsters, will be asked to switch on the district capital's festive lights in November. All those nominated will also be invited to attend the ceremony and take their place on stage. There will no doubt also be some other more tangible goodies on offer, plus the opportunity to have their stories told in print. We are now inviting nominations from across the district. If you know of someone aged 21 or under who you think has done something extraordinary with their lives, or has overcome illness or adversity, we want to know about them. You can use the entry forms to be printed in the Mid-Devon Advertiser, Teignmouth Post, and the Dawlish Post.Alternatively, visit http://www.middevonadvertiser.co.uk or">www.middevonadvertiser.co.uk or send an email to [email protected]">[email protected] forms will be published in our papers each week until October 30, the deadline for nominations to reach us is Monday, November 2.We need the contact details of both the young individual and those who are nominating. The judging will be carried out by our senior editorial team with the help of the 2007 winner, Jade Barlow.Teignbridge MP Richard Younger-Ross and Palm 105.5FM presenter Ben Moseby have also kindly agreed to join the panel.Young Heroes is a great opportunity to celebrate all that is best about our young people. The winner might be in your street right now, their light hidden under a bushel. So pass the message on and start nominating. In all cases we promise that no further action will be taken without the explicit consent of both the young person nominated and their parents or guardians.
