NEWTON Abbot Town Council Planning Committee is opposing an application by Newcare Devon for an extension at The Lindons, Ashburton Road. It would involve a first-floor extension to the single-storey building with the attic to provide improved office space and the provision of a lift to serve the first floor. At Tuesday's committee meeting, members heard it was a re-submission, following refusal, to try to overcome highways objections. The mayor, Cllr Daphne Watts, said she had considerable reservations about the application. 'We have what was essentially a care home which is now a total business. It is currently causing considerable problems. There are people coming and going and it has created problems with parking. 'They do not have the space to run the business they would like to run in that area,' said Cllr Watts, who added that it had turned a residential area into a busy business area. The meeting was told that it was now a total care business, with staff going out to customers, such as home helps, etc. Members agreed to inform Teignbridge Council that they were opposed to the application on highways grounds and insufficient parking for a business. p AN application has been made by Devon County Council for an extension to Coombeshead College, Newton Abbot, to provide new classrooms and a new play area. Members of Newton Abbot Town Council Planning Committee heard on Tuesday that it was phase three of ongoing improvements and would replace temporary classrooms. p NO objection is being offered to Teignbridge Council by Newton Abbot Town Council Planning Committee, to Andrew Hill's application to expand his hairdressing salon at 8 Powderham Road, by changing the use of first floor offices. p THE Plymouth Diocesan Trustees have put in a planning application for improvements to St Joseph's Church, Queen Street, Newton Abbot. The town council's planning committee heard on Tuesday that it would involve the formation of a new congregational entrance to the side of the church and construction of a single storey link to connect the church with the parish hall. It would also provide wheelchair access. Councillors believed it was a sensible move and would do away with a corridor area. They are recommending to Teignbridge Council that it is approved along with an application by the Feoffees of the parish lands of Highweek, for an extension to provide a common room, bedroom and toilet, at Gilberds House, in Old Exeter Road, Newton Abbot. p TOWN councillors have no objection to Mrs J Gilbert's application to change the use of Kiosk 1 in the Market Square, Newton Abbot, from a bus company office to a nail, body art and permanent make-up beauty studio.
