GIVE the boys a taste of home to let them know we are thinking of them. That is the call from members of the Torbay and District Branch of the Royal Marines Association, which covers the Teignbridge area. On Wednesday evening, members were busy putting together parcels in the Newton Abbot Royal British Legion function room, to send to our servicemen in Afghanistan, in time for Christmas. That is where Royal Marines of 42 Commando from Bickleigh, Plymouth, are currently based. Royal Mail has offered free postage to send the parcels between now and December 8, but it must be remembered the maximum weight is two kilos per pack. Anything slightly above that weight will not go through. Iain Wilson, secretary of the branch, said a shoe box was the ideal size for a parcel. Not allowed to be sent is alcohol, tobacco, chocolates, cakes or mince pies. The ideal items are cup-a-soups, noodles, toiletries such as toilet rolls, soaps, toothbrushes, toothpaste, etc, and local newspapers and magazines are always popular. That is everything that can be used when on the move. While chocolate is out because it will melt, other confectionery such as boiled sweets and mints can be sent. 'There must be many people in the area who know a serviceman over there and would like to donate some items or send a parcel to cheer them up and let them know we are thinking of them,' said Mr Wilson. Anyone who would like to donate a parcel – it must not be above two kilos – or items, can drop them into the Newton Abbot Royal British Legion, in Marsh Road, Newton Abbot, or contact Mr Wilson on 01626 201712.
