A POPULAR village hall has been given a new lease of life.
Victoria Hall in Bridge Road, Shaldon dates back to the late 1800s, and came under the auspices of the nearby St Peter’s Church.
But with ever-growing demands, the church was finding it increasingly difficult to meet its responsibilities.
Last year new trustees were appointed and they began to work towards making the hall a community venue.
With the parish council acting as the appointee for the trustees. These changes have now been formally agreed with the Charity Commission, and the Victoria Hall is looking forward to an ‘exciting’ future.
Two years ago it was in danger of closing after the resignation of the main officers.
Improvements are already underway to improve the toilets, as well as the lighting. Future plans for the summer include redecorating the interior and, with help from the Shaldon Theatre, replacing the curtains. The trustees will now be looking for grants to make major improvements over the next few years.
The hall is currently regularly used by Shaldon Pre-School, Shaldon Theatre Group, and the bridge club, as well as for a host of other community activities, from meetings to children’s parties. The hall is unique locally in that it offers a full sized stage. It can hold up to 200 people as well as offering a well-equipped kitchen.
The Victoria Hall is available to hire from £8 per hour, and more information about bookings can be had by emailing the booking secretary at [email protected].
