Shelves remained bare for much of the weekend in stores across Teignbridge.

Supermarkets ran out of fresh produce as delivery drivers struggled to get milk, bread and fresh fruit and veg to customers.

Some lucky shoppers managed to get supplies simply by being in the right place at the right time.

One shop worker at the Tesco superstore in Kingsteignton said: ‘We had two deliveries on Saturday which sold out very quickly.

‘After that there was nothing. We’re hoping to get another delivery on Sunday night but we cannot guarantee what it will be. The warehouses have been struggling all weekend and they themselves depend on what their suppliers can provide.’

Despite reports of shoppers across the UK fighting over the last few items on sale, there have been no such scenes in Kingsteignton. The shop worker said: ‘Everyone has been very patient and understanding of the situation.

‘It will all be back to normal very soon.’
