CHUDLEIGH archer Ryan Oliver is appealing for help from local businesses as he bids to become an Olympic star, writes Dean Stacey.
Oliver, 15, has enjoyed much success in the sport, with his biggest achievement so far undoubtedly being called up to the GB squad, which meets in October.
As a junior gentleman recurve, the youngster currently holds various titles at under-16 and under-18 level.
He has also just maintained his junior bowman status, the highest classification for his age.
Most recently, in August, Oliver took part in leg five of the National Series, a world record status event held in Exmouth.
He shared his target with British Olympian Naomi Folkard, giving him the opportunity to receive expert tips.
But the event reflected Oliver's need for sponsorship.
He explained: 'My equipment let me down, with one of my bow limbs twisting, affecting my overall results.
'It had to happen at some point as I have shot more than 100,000 arrows with this bow.
'But unfortunately I don't have the money to invest in a spare set, a GB requirement to compete abroad.
'My goal is to shoot for my town and country at Olympic and high international level, making everyone proud by bringing home gold medals.
'I have gained my first step on to the archery GB squad – my biggest achievement so far, after setting my sights on GB when I was only 12 years of age – but now I need sponsors to be able to maintain my place and to continue with my aim.'
Oliver – who studies part-time courses at South Devon College which fit around his training regime – already has two sponsors in the form of Moonstone Solutions Limited, which is developing and hosting his website (http://www.ryanoliverarcher.com">www.ryanoliverarcher.com), and New Horizons Removals and Storage Ltd, which has offered to help maintain his equipment.
He added: 'I am very grateful to both but I still have a lot further to go financially to secure my future place in the GB squad.
'My family have helped me financially all they can and I now need to search for sponsorship to help towards the overall costs of my expenses, which includes equipment, training costs and transport and accommodation when I'm competing away from home.'
