PARENTS of Alps’ skiing victim Kieran Brookes are supporting new legal moves to pursue a case of involuntary manslaughter.
Nick and Cindy Brookes, from Heathfield, welcomed an announcement by legal authorities in France to appeal against a court’s ruling that there was insufficient evidence to convict the operators of the ski lift which caused 14-year-old Kieran’s death in 2011.
The tragic youngster died when he became entangled in his backpack’s straps as he tried to get off the ski lift at the Chatel resort near Geneva. He died in hospital a month later after being flown back to the UK.
Ski lift operator SAEM Sports et Tourisme from Chatel, along with lift supervisor Richard Cettour, of Bonnevaux, France, were each charged with one count of indirect or involuntary manslaughter at court in Thonon-les-Bains, eastern France last year.
They were accused of failing to enforce a rule banning skiers from boarding the lift while wearing backpacks, not carrying out daily checks on equipment and not ensuring a safety device which could stop the lift was properly installed.
The appeal is expected to be heard in June.
