A TRAINEE jeweller from Newton Abbot witnessed the theft of diamond rings worth £2,500 in a snatch and grab raid on Friday.

Seventeen-year-old Gemma Preston-White, who works in H Samuel, Market Street, noticed a man loitering outside the window just after 4pm, as if 'he was trying to work out which was the most expensive item on display'.

The man entered the shop and asked to see a ring from the window. Gemma called her boss who took the tray from the window.

'He obviously knew what he wanted,' said Gemma, 'and knew he couldn't afford it. He grabbed the tray and ran out of the shop to a waiting car.'

Two men were arrested later the same day in Torquay and some property was recovered. #Both men were later bailed.
