POLICE are in talks about speed reduction measures at Exeter Road, described last week as a 'drag-race strip'. The 30mph hill from Bitton Park Road up to Little Haldon has been the site of five accidents in the last five months. The most recent was last Thursday when a middle-aged man had to be rescued by the Devon Air Ambulance when he was in a collision with a parked lorry. There is no indication that the accident was speed-related, but it is one too many accidents on the stretch of road for resident Vic Weston. Mr Weston said: 'This accident follows one a couple of weeks ago when one lad had a smash and there have been about three fatalities here as far as I can remember. 'I do not agree with speed cameras as a general rule because they are more often than not a money-making exercise. 'But it is a different story in the right place and for the right reason and it could solve the problem here. 'It is getting worse by the day', he said. Paramedics had to cut free the casualty from his wrecked red Vauxhall Vectra estate after it became jammed under a parked lorry near the junction with New Road. Two fire crews from Teignmouth used small tools and hydraulic equipment to cut the roof from the vehicle to enable paramedics to free him. He was taken to the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital by air ambulance. He suffered only minor injuries. It follows a number of accidents in recent months, including a single vehicle accident on May 21 and a two-vehicle collision on April 14. There was also a report of an accident near the golf course on May 8 and a collision with a deer on Little Haldon on January 24. Police road safety officer PC Martin Hartnell said that he is in the process of an analysis of all accidents over the past three years as part of safety measures. 'There has been a progressive method of speed reduction along the road right past Breakneck Hill. 'Though we are not sure that last week's accident was speed related, we are aware that there are speeding issues there and working with local service group on measures to reduce speed. Engineering work, including chicanes, is a possibility, but speed humps have been ruled out because it is a diversion route from the town.
